Working from home has officially gone too far because a Detroit cop really thought it was acceptable to show up to virtual court in his underwear. Officer Matthew Jackson logged onto Zoom for a disorderly conduct hearing with his police uniform shirt on and absolutely nothing below the waist. What a way to start the meeting off.
The Moment Everyone Saw Too Much
The whole thing was going normally until Judge Sean Perkins asked Jackson to appear on camera for the record. That is when everyone got an eyeful of the officer sitting on his couch looking like he just rolled out of bed. The uniform shirt was crisp and professional. Everything below the frame was decidedly not. It was the kind of moment that makes you wonder if anyone has ever actually read the Zoom etiquette guidelines that were sent out during the pandemic.

Defense attorney TaTaNisha Reed was trying to figure out if she was really seeing what she thought she was seeing. She told the judge "He needs to alter his camera," which is the politest way to say this man is half naked in court. The professionalism of her response in that moment deserves its own award, because most people would not have been able to keep a straight face.
The Judge Had To Ask The Unthinkable
Judge Perkins looked at his screen and had to literally ask "You got some pants on, officer?" which is a sentence no judge should ever have to say in the history of the American legal system. Jackson said "No sir" without a hint of embarrassment and just moved his camera up. The casual nature of the response is what made the moment even more unbelievable. He was not flustered. He was not apologetic. He just adjusted the angle like it was a minor technical issue.
The clip immediately went viral, with legal professionals, police officers, and regular internet users all weighing in on how a sworn officer of the law could show up to a court proceeding without pants. The memes wrote themselves, and the comments sections across every platform were filled with people who could not believe what they were watching.
The Department Responded Quickly
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison released a statement apologizing to the court and saying this does not represent the department professionalism. The statement was measured and appropriate, but it also could not fully contain the embarrassment of having one of your officers become a national punchline for forgetting to wear pants to court.
Judge William McConico said he was stunned because Jackson is normally a very professional officer, which somehow makes the whole thing even funnier. The idea that this is completely out of character for him means that on this particular day, something went very wrong in his morning routine. The pandemic might be over, but some people clearly never left that Zoom meeting from the waist up mentality, and it shows.
