Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Gets Life After Confessing To Eight Murders

The End Of A Decades Long Nightmare

Rex Heuermann, a 62 year old New York architect, was sentenced on June 17, 2026 to multiple life sentences without parole for the murders of eight women whose remains were found near Gilgo Beach on Long Island. The killings spanned more than 17 years, beginning in November 1993.

As Heuermann was handcuffed and removed from the courtroom, spectators erupted in cheers and applause. Judge Timothy Mazzei called him a "coward" and a "disgusting and despicable small man" before handing down the sentence.

His Confession

Heuermann pleaded guilty on April 8, 2026 to murdering seven women and admitted to killing an eighth, 34 year old Karen Vergata. This was a stunning reversal for a man who, according to his lawyer, tearfully denied responsibility after his arrest in 2023.

In court, Heuermann spoke briefly, telling the judge: "The words I would say have no meaning. There are no words I can say. I am responsible for all that was said in this room."

The Victims

The eight victims were Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; Amber Costello, 27; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Jessica Taylor, 20; Sandra Costilla, 28; Valerie Mack, 24; and Karen Vergata, 34.

Barthelemy's sister, Amanda Funderburg, addressed Heuermann directly in court, calling him a "repulsive monster" and a "demon inside and out."

"I hope you take a spot in hell because I will see you there."

How He Was Finally Caught

Investigators suspected a serial killer when remains were found in 2010 and 2011, but Heuermann was not linked to the case until 2022. The key break came when they matched DNA from a pizza he ate to a male hair found with the remains.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said a massive task force worked quietly to solve the murders, hoping to lull Heuermann into a false sense of security so they could collect crucial evidence.

Liliana Waterman, whose mother was among the victims, urged the public to focus on the women who lost their lives rather than their killer. "Rex will never matter," she said. "And he is nothing to us and he should be nothing to any of you."
