The Deadly Firework Incident In Summerville, South Carolina
According to Fox 35 Orlando, the incident took place on Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Dorchester County. McGrew's wife Paige told authorities that her husband had been drinking for several hours during the block party. Around 10:30 p.m., she saw him place a large firework on top of his Uncle Sam top hat.
Paige initially thought her husband was joking, as did other family members in attendance.
"He was holding this firework over his top hat. I thought he was just showboating before he set it on the ground. I didn't realize he had already lit it."
The firework exploded while still on top of his head, causing massive head injuries. Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers confirmed that McGrew died instantly from the blast. His official time of death was declared at 11:10 p.m.

According to the New York Post, McGrew had been wearing a star spangled Uncle Sam suit and matching top hat all day, dancing in the front yard and smoking a cigarette as the neighborhood gathered for the celebration. Despite the horrific circumstances, Paige said she would remember her husband as a patriot who was living his best life on his favorite holiday.
"He worked hard and he played hard."
The coroner ruled McGrew's death an accident.
Firework Safety Remains A Serious Concern
According to Fox 35 Orlando, eight firework related deaths were reported in 2023, and 9,700 people were treated in emergency rooms for fireworks injuries that same year. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has repeatedly cautioned individuals against handling fireworks while impaired and advises consumers to never hold fireworks while they are lit or waiting to ignite.
McGrew's tragic passing serves as a sobering reminder of just how dangerous fireworks can be, especially when combined with alcohol. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this incredibly difficult time.
