The Charges Are Horrific
Kiran Pasunuri, 44, has been charged with attempted first degree murder in Garner, North Carolina. He also faces two counts of felony intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and two counts of felony negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
The victim is his own 2 year old child, who was found with a spinal fracture. The injuries were so severe that investigators determined they could not have been accidental.
How The Investigation Unfolded
Garner Police Department officers responded after the child was brought to a medical facility with injuries inconsistent with any explanation the father provided. Medical professionals immediately flagged the case as suspected abuse.
Doctors determined the toddler had sustained a spinal fracture along with other injuries that pointed to sustained and intentional harm. The severity of the injuries led investigators to escalate charges from child abuse to attempted murder.
The Father Is In Custody
Pasunuri was taken into custody and is being held in the Wake County Detention Center. His bond has been set, though the exact amount has not been publicly disclosed given the severity of the charges.
Neighbors expressed shock at the arrest, describing the family as quiet and private. But behind closed doors, a 2 year old was being subjected to violence that left permanent damage to their spine.
The Child's Condition
The toddler is receiving medical treatment for the spinal fracture and related injuries. Child Protective Services has been involved since the initial report, and the child has been removed from the father's custody.
This case serves as a reminder that abuse often hides behind closed doors in communities that appear peaceful on the surface. Anyone who suspects child abuse is urged to contact local authorities or the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453.
