Even The President Had To Acknowledge This One
The New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years, and President Donald Trump wasted no time congratulating the team. Love him or hate him, when the biggest sports moment in New York history happens, the president is going to weigh in.
Trump posted his congratulations shortly after the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94 to 90 in Game 5. Jalen Brunson led the charge with 45 points in what will go down as one of the greatest Finals performances in NBA history.
Social Media Was Divided As Always
Of course, the reaction to Trump's message was split right down the middle. His supporters applauded him for acknowledging a historic moment for New York. His critics questioned the sincerity and pointed out that the former New York businessman has had a complicated relationship with the NBA over the years.
Some fans simply did not want politics mixed into their championship celebration. Others appreciated that regardless of political affiliation, this was a moment worth acknowledging. The Knicks haven't won since 1973. That transcends politics.
The congratulatory post also came amid a busy news week for the White House, including reports about an unprecedented UFC event being planned for the White House lawn. The collision of sports, entertainment, and politics continues to be a defining theme of this administration.
New York Is Celebrating Regardless
At the end of the day, Knicks fans do not care who congratulates them. They care that the trophy is coming home. The parade route is being planned. The city is electric. And for the first time in over half a century, Knicks fans can say they witnessed a championship.
Will we see Jalen Brunson at the White House? That is a conversation for another day. For now, New York is partying.
