Thomas Wayne Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested by federal agents in Florida on Friday, November 6, on a federal criminal complaint charging him with one count of possession of child pornography. The United States Attorney for the Central District of California announced the arrest the same day.

Markle, age 82, lives at a senior living facility in Lakeland, Florida. Agents took him into custody there on Friday morning. He made his first appearance later that day in United States District Court in Tampa, where a judge released him on house arrest with GPS monitoring and barred him from using the internet while the case moves forward.
Prosecutors allege the case began in October 2026, when a person in the Philippines signed an affidavit saying they had found suspected child sexual abuse material among Markle possessions there. Acting on search warrants, FBI agents searched two storage units in the Los Angeles area that Markle had rented for close to twenty years. The Justice Department says agents seized about 78 items from the units, including slides, film negatives and books said to contain suspected child sexual abuse material. First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli said the complaint accuses Markle of possessing child sexual abuse material, including photographs said to depict Markle himself with minor girls. FBI Director Kash Patel said agents moved quickly once the material was identified and located.
Those are allegations in a criminal complaint. A complaint is an accusation, not a conviction, and nothing in this case has been proved in court. Markle has denied the allegations, calling them sick lies in comments reported by the Daily Mail. He is presumed innocent unless the government proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
If he is convicted, the charge carries a maximum sentence of twenty years in federal prison. The FBI is leading the investigation, and the case is filed in the Central District of California even though the arrest and first hearing happened in Florida. No trial date has been announced.
Markle and his daughter have been estranged for years, and she has not commented publicly on the arrest. This article will be updated as court filings and hearings add confirmed facts.
