The intersection of Crenshaw and Slauson in South Los Angeles is about to carry a new name, and it belongs to the man who turned that corner into a symbol of Black entrepreneurship and community pride. Nipsey Hussle, the Grammy nominated rapper and activist who was murdered outside his Marathon Clothing store in 2019, will be permanently honored with the renaming of one of the most iconic intersections in hip hop history.
Crenshaw And Slauson Gets A New Name
According to Hip Hop DX, the Los Angeles City Council approved the renaming of the Crenshaw and Slauson intersection to honor Nipsey Hussle and his lasting impact on the community. The intersection holds deep significance, not just for hip hop fans, but for the entire South LA neighborhood that Nipsey poured his time, money, and energy into for years before his death.
The corner of Crenshaw and Slauson was more than just a location in Nipsey music. It was the foundation of everything he built. His Marathon Clothing store sat just steps from the intersection, and the rapper used the space as a hub for community engagement, job creation, and economic development in a neighborhood that had been historically underserved and overlooked.
The Marathon Continues In A Permanent Way
Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was fatally shot on March 31, 2019, in the parking lot of his Marathon Clothing store. He was 33 years old. The shooting sent shockwaves through the music industry and the city of Los Angeles, where Nipsey was beloved not just as a rapper but as a community leader who practiced what he preached about ownership, reinvestment, and lifting up the people around him.
Before his death, Nipsey had been working with city officials on plans to redevelop the area around his store, including affordable housing and a mixed use commercial space that would create jobs for local residents. He also co owned a co working space called Vector 90, which provided STEM education and resources to young people in the neighborhood. His vision extended far beyond music, and the people who knew him best say the intersection renaming is exactly the kind of legacy he would have wanted.
The Community Has Been Pushing For This
Fans and community members have been advocating for permanent tributes to Nipsey Hussle since the day he was killed. A massive memorial was erected at the Marathon Clothing store in the days following his death, and thousands of people from across the country traveled to South LA to pay their respects. The outpouring of grief was unlike anything the city had seen since the passing of Kobe Bryant.
In the years since, there have been murals painted across Los Angeles, a posthumous Grammy win for his album Victory Lap, and a public memorial at the Staples Center that drew over 20,000 people. But the intersection renaming carries a different weight. Murals fade. Awards sit on shelves. A street name is permanent. Every person who drives through that intersection, every GPS that routes through Crenshaw and Slauson, will carry Nipsey Hussle name forward.
Lauren London, Nipsey longtime partner and the mother of his son, has continued to honor his memory publicly while keeping much of her grief private. She has not publicly commented on the intersection renaming at the time of this publication, but those close to the family say the honor means the world to them.
The Marathon continues. And now it has an address that will never change.
