A Learjet 60 business jet carrying nine people crashed into a residential area near Cresthaven, close to Greenacres, at about 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and every person on board was killed.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the jet had departed Austin Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas, and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The crash happened onMilitary Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, at the entrance to a mobile home community in an unincorporated part of the county near Greenacres and Palm Springs, about four miles south of the airport in West Palm Beach.

View this post on Instagram

What happened

Witness video shows the jet plunging toward the ground before it slammed into the roadway and erupted in flames. The impact tore a giant crater into the pavement, buckled the road around it, scattered debris across a wide area and set several fires burning, the Associated Press reported. Flames were still rising from the crater after the crash, and a utility pole stood at the edge of the wreckage.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who joined local officials at a news conference near the scene, described the video of the fall in stark terms. "It looked like a missile going down," the governor said.

Andrew Mannino, who lives in the area, told CNN he felt the blast from his home. "I heard and felt the boom," he said. "The power immediately went out and is still out." He said he smelled smoke and saw a large black cloud fill the air.

The flight and the final minutes

Air traffic control recordings captured by LiveATC.net and reported by CNN show the crew fighting to keep the jet steady in the minutes before the crash. The pilot told the Miami Air Route Traffic Control Center that the jet had picked up light, clear ice that was manageable, and reported moderate turbulence that was bouncing the plane by as much as 700 feet. The pilot also reported an outside air temperature of 47 degrees below zero Celsius.

Moments later, after precipitation began and the crew asked to climb, the pilot declared an emergency. "Mayday, mayday. We are descending 10000 feet per minute," the pilot said, then reported that the jet was in an overspeed condition and descending 20000 feet per minute. The final words were, "We are going to crash into the ground."

Flight tracking data from ADS B Exchange, reviewed by CNN, shows the jet descended 27000 feet over the course of about one minute before the tracking data cut off.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people on board were killed, calling the crash a "horrific tragedy" and asking the public to pray for the families and loved ones of those who were lost.

The response on the ground

The Palm Beach County Sheriffs Office said deputies and fire crews responded to an aircraft incident on Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, and closed all northbound and southbound lanes until further notice. The office urged motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue described the response as an extended incident and treated the scene as a mass casualty incident in the first hours. Greenacres Fire Rescue sent four units to help.

Governor DeSantis said there were no reports of anyone on the ground being killed, and officials at the news conference said no one on the ground was reported injured, even though the jet came down within feet of occupied homes and a busy roadway. The crash did leave a significant debris field, the governor said.

The damage on the ground forced hundreds of families out of their homes. Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores, District 3, who was the first county official at the scene, said about 600 residents need shelter because of the damage. The residents are being taken to two shelters in the county while the site is investigated, he said. County officials said residents are being assisted with temporary shelter and other essential needs, and buses were used to move displaced families.

The aircraft

The jet was a Learjet 60, a twin engine business jet that typically seats about eight people. Austin Bergstrom International Airport spokesperson Jim Reynolds told the Associated Press the aircraft was a private jet and gave its tail number as N722BD. Federal records list the aircraft as registered to LR60271 LLC, a company with an address in Wilmington, Delaware, and the jet was listed as available for charter online, CNN reported. The FAA said its information is preliminary and subject to change.

CNN reported that Sunday marked the second deadliest aviation crash in the United States this year, according to National Transportation Safety Board records, following a June skydiving plane crash in Butler, Missouri, that killed 12 people. It was also the worst crash involving a Learjet 60, according to data from the Flight Safety Foundation. Four people were killed in 2008 when a Learjet 60 bound for Los Angeles crashed on takeoff from Columbia, South Carolina.

Weather at the time

The National Weather Service in Miami reported overcast skies in the West Palm Beach area at the time of the crash, with rain and lightning, winds from the east at about 15 miles per hour and gusts up to 25 miles per hour, and visibility of seven miles. CNN reported there were scattered storms in the area, that the flight passed through a stronger storm cell a few minutes before it began descending, and that the flight was in an area where the FAA had warned of thunderstorms in a notice known as a convective SIGMET. No official has said the weather caused the crash, and the cause remains unknown.

What officials say happens next

The FAA said the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, and the NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide all updates. Secretary Duffy said the FAA was sending a team to support the NTSB. NTSB investigators were expected to arrive at the site on Sunday and Monday, and a news conference is planned for Monday. Investigators will study the flight track, the air traffic control recordings, the weather, and the wreckage, and the dashcam video of the fall is expected to be an important piece of evidence, CNN aviation analyst Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general of the Transportation Department, told CNN. She said the descent was not a controlled descent and that, in her analysis, the crew had lost control of the plane.

What investigators said on Monday

National Transportation Safety Board member Thomas Chapman briefed reporters in West Palm Beach on Monday afternoon. Chapman said investigators have found evidence the jet began breaking up before it hit the ground, and the team is still working to piece together exactly what happened. He said the debris field stretches about half a mile long and four tenths of a mile wide, and crews are waiting for the water filled crater at the impact site to drain so the work can continue. The board does not name a cause at this stage, and Chapman declined to speculate about what brought the jet down.

Officials also corrected the picture on the ground. One man on the ground suffered a leg injury, the first reported injury outside the aircraft. About 100 homes near the site in Greenacres have been evacuated, and County Commissioner Joel Flores estimated 400 to 600 people have been displaced. The Red Cross is caring for residents at the Greenacres Community Center.

The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner has not yet identified the nine people on board. Families have begun speaking for some of them. The fathers of a married couple told The Palm Beach Post the couple and their two young children were among those killed, and the paper is holding the family names while relatives are notified. The family of co pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, of Boca Raton has identified her publicly. Her sister Giulia Filgueiras told reporters Nathalia fought until the last moment she could.

Families name the couple, their children and the pilot

The married couple and their two young children first reported on Monday are now named by their families. Helen Sharp, 40, and her husband Adam Robinson, 45, were traveling with their two toddlers, according to Helen's father Dudley Sharp and Adam's father Theodore Robinson, who spoke with The Palm Beach Post. Both fathers said authorities have not yet formally notified them, and the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner has still not officially identified anyone who was on board. Robinson founded a software company and posted on LinkedIn shortly before the flight, and Sharp owned a public relations company and worked as a potter.

The pilot flying the jet has also been named in reporting as Jeff Gregory, 55, an experienced pilot from Pennsylvania, alongside co pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, whose family identified her earlier on Monday. The remaining passengers were the children's nanny and two close friends of the couple, and they have not yet been publicly named. With two crew members and seven passengers, that accounts for all nine people on board.

Investigators said the flight was a paid charter that left Austin at 10:37 in the morning bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. NTSB member Thomas Chapman said the team is very hopeful it can recover a flight recorder from the wreckage, which could hold cockpit audio from the final moments. He also warned that parts of the aircraft may be found some distance from the impact site, and anyone who finds debris is asked not to touch or move it and to contact authorities instead.

What is still unconfirmed

Everything in this section is unconfirmed. The Talk Lounge is listing it here so readers can tell the difference between what officials have verified and what is still only being claimed or wondered about online.

The cause of the crash is unconfirmed. No official has said why the jet fell, and any claim that ice, weather, engine trouble, or any other single factor brought the jet down is unconfirmed until the NTSB investigation establishes it.

The identities of the nine people who were killed are unconfirmed. Officials have not released any names, and officials have not said how many of the nine were passengers and how many were crew. Names circulating online are unconfirmed until officials release them.

Witness claims about what the jet was doing before the fall are unconfirmed. Claims that the jet was on fire in the air, that an engine had failed, or that the jet struck a tree, power lines, or a home in a specific order have been reported in early coverage, but officials have not confirmed an exact sequence of the impact.

Reports about injuries on the ground beyond the official count are unconfirmed. Officials said at the news conference that no one on the ground was reported killed or injured. Any claim of ground injuries beyond that official word is unconfirmed.

Early flight data claims are unconfirmed. Some early reports described the jet falling from far lower altitudes, based on a tracking reading that may have been a sensor error. The descent figures in the confirmed reporting above come from the ADS B Exchange data reviewed by CNN, and the full flight data picture is still subject to the NTSB review.

Follow up coverage

This is a developing story, and The Talk Lounge will publish follow ups and updates as officials release more, including the names of the victims when officials release them and the findings of the NTSB as the investigation moves forward.
