A gunman stormed the security perimeter at the White House Correspondents' Dinner Saturday night, opening fire near the main entrance of the Washington Hilton as President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, cabinet members, and more than 2,500 guests were gathered inside the ballroom.
Shots Ring Out During the Dinner
At approximately 8:35 PM local time, a series of loud bangs erupted from just outside the ballroom. The smiles instantly turned to shock and fear. Melania Trump, who had been chatting with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, turned and appeared to say "oh my God" as the sounds registered.
Pandemonium erupted. Guests in evening wear ducked under their tables as dishes clattered and security officers shouted "get down!" and "stay down!" Trump got on the ground as Secret Service agents in tactical gear rushed to the stage with rifles drawn.
Trump was seated next to Weijia Jiang, the CBS News journalist and president of the White House Correspondents' Association. He later said he initially thought the shots were the noise of trays being dropped, but it became clear within seconds that it was not.
Suspect Identified as Cole Tomas Allen
The suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California. According to federal authorities, Allen was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he charged a security checkpoint at 8:36 PM and ran toward the ballroom.
He exchanged gunfire with law enforcement and was tackled to the ground. Allen is now in federal custody. The FBI confirmed that a suspect was apprehended and the scene was secured.
In a manifesto reportedly sent to his family just 10 minutes before the attack, Allen mocked what he called an "insane" lack of security at the event and revealed plans to target Trump and administration officials. He wrote that he would "go through most everyone" to reach his intended targets.
Nicki Minaj Was Inside the Venue
Rapper Nicki Minaj was among the guests at the dinner, having secured an invite through Fox News as her political alignment with Trump deepened over recent months. She narrowly avoided the shooting, with reports indicating she was inside the ballroom when the shots rang out.
Trump later told 60 Minutes that he "wasn't worried" during the incident. The president, first lady, vice president, and all cabinet members were safely evacuated from the building.
Security Questions Mount
The shooting has raised serious questions about security at the annual event. The Washington Hilton has hosted the dinner for decades, but critics are now questioning how a heavily armed individual was able to get close enough to the venue to open fire.
