Nature Had Other Plans
President Trump's July 4th address celebrating America's 250th anniversary was dramatically interrupted by a severe thunderstorm that rolled through Washington D.C. with little warning. Hundreds of thousands of people on the National Mall were forced to scramble for shelter as lightning, heavy rain, and high winds hit the area.
The storm forced the evacuation of outdoor events and sent attendees into the Smithsonian museums, metro stations, and any available indoor space along the Mall.
The Chaotic Scene
Videos from the event show crowds running in all directions as the storm hit. The scene went from celebration to chaos within minutes, with families separated and people crammed into building entrances trying to escape the downpour.
The storm passed within approximately 45 minutes, but by then the scheduled programming had been disrupted beyond recovery. The fireworks display was delayed but eventually proceeded once conditions cleared.
The Images That Went Viral
The most shared image from the event was Trump supporters taking shelter inside the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which many online noted as ironic. The moment became one of the defining viral images of the July 4th weekend.
