Why Houston Needed This Move
The trade comes directly in response to Jayden Higgins suffering a torn ACL during joint practices with the Las Vegas Raiders last week. Higgins, a 2025 second-round pick who posted 525 receiving yards and six touchdowns as a rookie, was projected to be the No. 2 receiver behind star Nico Collins entering the 2026 season. That plan was destroyed with one non-contact injury during a routine practice session.
Without Higgins, C.J. Stroud would have entered his third NFL season with a dangerously thin receiver group behind Collins. Opposing defenses would have been free to bracket and double-cover Collins on nearly every meaningful snap, dramatically limiting what the Houston passing game could accomplish against playoff-caliber competition.
What Boutte Brings To Houston
Boutte entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick out of LSU where he was once considered a potential first-round talent before injuries and inconsistency dropped his stock. With the Patriots he showed enough speed and route-running ability to warrant legitimate starter reps, but New England depth at the position made him expendable once Houston came calling with an offer.
He profiles as a vertical receiver with legitimate deep speed who can stretch defenses and force safeties to respect the deep ball. That is exactly what Collins needs beside him. Collins wins with physicality, contested catches, and intermediate routes. Having a credible deep threat on the other side prevents defenses from sitting on those routes and cheating toward Collins.
What New England Gets Back
For the Patriots, the return of Reed and a future late-round pick addresses secondary depth while clearing a roster spot at a position where they had multiple viable options competing for playing time. Reed started in the playoffs last year for Houston and brings experience to a New England defense being rebuilt around younger players.
The AFC Title Race
The Texans are built to contend this season. Stroud is entering year three, the defense added pieces in free agency, and the front office has been relentlessly aggressive about surrounding its franchise quarterback with weapons.
