Russell Brand Found Guilty Of Rape And Sexual Assault In London

A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London found Russell Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The jury cleared him of two further counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault. The verdicts came after about eight and a half hours of deliberation following a four week trial.

Brand, 51, was taken into custody after the verdicts were read and was refused bail. Mr Justice Bennathan told him to expect a significant custodial term and remanded him in custody until sentencing on Monday, November 9.

The charges involved six women, with the alleged incidents spanning 1999 to 2009. The rape conviction concerns an assault at Brand's Hampstead home in 2009. The sexual assault convictions include an assault at a Soho bar in 2004 and an assault at Choice FM in 2004 or 2005.

Brand denied all seven charges. He gave evidence during the trial and answered no when asked whether he was guilty of the counts against him.

The Metropolitan Police said its investigation began in 2023 after allegations against Brand were reported by The Sunday Times and broadcast by Channel 4 Dispatches in September 2023. Detectives then built the case that led to charges in April 2025.

The Crown Prosecution Service said Brand will be sentenced on Monday, November 9, at Southwark Crown Court. The judge said a custodial sentence is inevitable. The length of the term will be decided at the sentencing hearing. Under British sentencing guidelines the maximum sentence for rape is life imprisonment, although a more typical term is four to 19 years.

Brand first found fame as a comedian and television presenter before moving into film and then building a large online audience. The trial drew wide attention in Britain and beyond, with crowds and cameras outside the court through the four weeks of evidence.

Sentencing on Monday will close the case in court. The Talk Lounge will follow the hearing and report the sentence when the judge hands it down.
