Put a Ring on It: Cheathab Becomes OWN's Biggest Reality Hit in Years

Oweee! The Put a Ring on It franchise reached a new peak this summer, with its spinoff Cheathab debuting as OWN's highest-rated unscripted series in more than seven years. The relationship experiment premiered Friday, July 31, 2026, at 9 PM ET/PT before settling into its regular Friday 8 PM slot on August 14.

Produced by Will Packer Media and Blink49 Studios, the series pushed the original format into more intense territory by centering the entire season on couples recovering from infidelity.

The premise

The show follows three long-term couples whose relationships were derailed by cheating. Rather than working through their issues at home, the partners move into a Miami-based house and confront their mistrust, jealousy, and unresolved wounds under one roof.

The format is deliberately provocative. Over the course of the experiment, partners are encouraged to date other people, including former flings and past love interests who caused the original fractures, before deciding whether to commit or walk away.

The relationship coach at the center

Guiding the couples is Dr. Stacii Jae Johnson, a Spelman College alumna with a master's in Marriage and Family Therapy. Known for a direct, no-nonsense coaching style, she runs weekly workshops designed to break down defenses and force accountability.

Johnson structured the experiment to push each couple toward a breaking point, using the external dates and intensive sessions to expose the issues underneath the surface. By the end, every couple has to choose between a final commitment or a permanent split.

Meet the couples

The season features three pairs at a crossroads. Dominique and Travis are a long-distance couple whose bond broke after Travis admitted to a fling in Las Vegas, with Dominique now demanding security and a ring. Mia and Jarron built their connection online in 2022, only for their faith-based foundation to crack after Mia discovered his infidelity.

The third couple, Mi-Mi and Joshua, hit a wall after Joshua reconnected with an ex. Joshua has already proposed twice, including once at a Walmart, but Mi-Mi has refused to say yes until the trust between them is rebuilt.

Why it resonated

OWN President Tina Perry framed the spinoff as the network leaning into more unfiltered perspectives on modern romance. Stripping away everyday distractions and forcing couples to face betrayal head-on gave the series a raw edge that clearly connected with viewers.

The record ratings suggest the harder-edged concept struck a nerve, positioning the Put a Ring on It brand as one of OWN's strongest reality properties.

What happens next

With the spinoff performing at record levels, attention turns to whether OWN expands the concept further and which couples ultimately choose commitment over a clean break. For now, Cheathab has given the network its biggest unscripted moment in years and a clear template to build on.
