Man Swallows $770K In Stolen Tiffany Diamonds During Arrest
In one of the most bizarre theft cases in recent memory, 32 year old Jaythan Gilder of Houston, Texas was arrested after allegedly stealing nearly $770,000 worth of diamond earrings from a Tiffany and Co. store in Orlando, Florida, and then swallowing the jewelry during his arrest to hide the evidence. The case, which sounds like something out of a heist movie, has left both law enforcement and the public in disbelief.
According to court documents and reports from CBS News and multiple outlets, Gilder walked into the Tiffany and Co. location on February 26, 2025, posing as a representative for an Orlando Magic basketball player. The ruse was convincing enough that store staff escorted him to a VIP room to view high end jewelry. Once inside, Gilder allegedly managed to slip away with two sets of diamond earrings: a 4.86 carat pair valued at $160,000 and an 8.10 carat set priced at $609,500, for a combined total of $769,500.
He Tried To Swallow The Evidence
When authorities caught up with Gilder during a traffic stop on a Florida Panhandle highway, the situation took an even more unbelievable turn. According to police, Gilder swallowed the stolen diamond earrings during his apprehension in a desperate attempt to destroy the evidence. Dashcam footage from the arrest, which was later released to the public, captured the chaotic scene as officers realized what the suspect was doing.
An X ray taken after the arrest appeared to show the jewelry inside Gilder's body, confirming what officers suspected. Orlando police then faced the unenviable task of waiting to recover the stolen diamonds through natural means. According to the BBC and NDTV, it took approximately 12 days for the earrings to be fully recovered, at which point they were returned to Tiffany and Co.
The Internet Had A Field Day
The story quickly went viral, with social media users marveling at the absurdity of the situation. "Did he really think swallowing earrings worth more than a house would work?" one user joked. Others created memes about the lengths people will go to in order to conceal stolen goods. The phrase "Florida Man" trended once again, as the case fit perfectly into the long tradition of bizarre crime stories coming out of the Sunshine State.
Despite the humor, legal experts noted that Gilder faces extremely serious charges. The sophistication of the initial theft, which involved impersonating a representative for a professional athlete to gain VIP access, suggests a level of planning that prosecutors will likely use to argue for significant penalties.
Facing Serious Charges
Jaythan Gilder now faces charges including grand theft and additional counts related to the incident. The earrings have been recovered and returned to Tiffany and Co., but the investigation into how Gilder pulled off the initial heist continues. Authorities are examining whether he acted alone or had accomplices, and whether he has attempted similar schemes at other luxury retailers. One thing is certain: this is a case that law enforcement and the public will not soon forget.
