A woman in Manchester, New Hampshire was rescued from inside a garbage truck after she fell into a dumpster while taking out her trash. The truck had already compacted its contents multiple times before the driver realized she was inside, making the rescue one of the most harrowing incidents first responders in the area had dealt with in recent memory.
The Woman Fell Into A Dumpster While Taking Out Trash
According to Boston 25 News, the incident occurred on Monday, January 29, 2024, on Beech Hill Drive in Manchester. Fire officials believe the woman, described by neighbors as a 60 year old resident of the community, fell into the dumpster while throwing out her garbage. The garbage truck then arrived and lifted the bin, dumping its contents, including the woman, into the compactor.
The truck driver told rescuers that the truck had compacted the garbage at least three to four times before he noticed the woman through an interior camera. Once he realized what had happened, he immediately called authorities.
The Rescue Took Nearly 30 Minutes
First responders were called to the scene a little before 1 PM. The rescue operation took approximately 30 minutes. Firefighters attempted to communicate with the woman through a side panel of the truck. Despite her condition, she appeared to be conscious and somewhat responsive.
Rescuers ultimately used a basket attached to a fire truck crane to lift the woman out of the garbage truck. The operation required careful coordination to avoid causing further injury.
Neighbors Described The Scene As Horrifying
Neighbors who witnessed the rescue described the scene in disturbing detail. Amanda Czzowitz, who lives near the woman, told Boston 25 News that the woman was screaming in "agony" as rescuers worked to free her.
Her husband, Matthew Czzowitz, said their children were home from school at the time and were not allowed to watch as the woman was pulled from the truck. The couple expressed shock that something so terrifying could happen during a routine garbage pickup.
The woman reportedly told authorities that she had simply been throwing out her trash when she fell into the dumpster. It remains unclear exactly how she ended up inside the bin, but neighbors speculated that she may have leaned in too far and lost her balance.
The Woman Was Hospitalized In Serious Condition
After being freed from the truck, the woman was transported to Elliot Hospital in Manchester. Her condition was listed as serious at the time of transport. According to the Boston Globe, she was later released from the hospital, suggesting her injuries, while significant, were not life threatening.
The incident served as a frightening reminder of the dangers that can come from something as routine as taking out the trash. An investigation into the incident was ongoing, though no charges were expected to be filed against the truck driver, who acted quickly once he discovered the woman inside.
The investigation remains active and authorities have indicated that additional developments are expected in the coming days and weeks. Cases like this serve as a reminder of the complexities of the justice system and the impact that criminal proceedings have on the individuals, families, and communities involved. As more information becomes available, the full picture of what happened and why will continue to come into focus.
