A Mississippi mother named Shakayla Dixon was fired from her job at a Burger King in Clinton, Mississippi after she hired her son and his friends to work at the restaurant over the summer. Dixon wanted to keep the teenagers busy and out of trouble during the break from school. Her 15 year old son Corderrion Valentine was among the teens hired. Valentine told WLBT3 that he felt like it was a good thing because they could have really been out doing violence or shooting, but instead they went out and worked. The sentiment reflected exactly what Dixon was trying to accomplish: keeping young people productive and earning money rather than getting caught up in the dangers of their surroundings.

The Post That Changed Everything

Dixon was proud of the boys and shared a photo of the crew on Facebook. The post went viral almost immediately. Even Nick Cannon reshared the image on Instagram, where it received more than 90,000 likes. The positive attention was overwhelming, and for a brief moment it looked like a feel good story about a mother doing the right thing for her community.

But the attention also brought scrutiny. Dixon said she received a call from her manager and district leader shortly after the post blew up. They raised concerns about the fact that Corderrion was her son and about how much the teenagers were being paid. According to Dixon, she was told that minors are supposed to be paid differently than adults, a policy she said she was not aware of when she hired the boys. She told the outlet that she felt like the policy was not in place at the beginning and that the situation was a miscommunication rather than intentional wrongdoing.

The Firing

Dixon and the teenagers were all let go from the restaurant. Corderrion was upset about losing the job, saying he thought it was a fun way to get ready for the real world. The firing felt especially harsh given the context: a mother trying to protect her son and his friends from violence was punished for what she described as an honest mistake about pay policy. After losing her job, Dixon set up a GoFundMe to help cover her mortgage and school clothes for the kids.
